Shane brings to the turntables a unique mix of breaks and electro-taking the recent resurgence in the genre and giving it his own dark twist. His subtle sound-wave manipulation through intricate crossfader slamming not only blends, but slices and re-edits the glitchy vocoded sounds that define today's electro sound. With 20 years of musical performance behind him and over four years of DJing, Shane envisions the art of DJing as something more that just mixing two records together. To him, music is a canvas with limitless potential, capable of talking to one's soul while simultaneously tapping his subjects in to the dark and funky dance floor grooves. A musician since the age of eight, Shane spent most of his early years learning how to harness the power of the tuba. Moving through High School, not only did he learn a myriad of other instruments, but by his senior year he also was among the top tuba players in New York State, invited to perform in the elite NYSSMA All-State Band. Once in college, he was handed a guitar for the first time and learned how to play within a few weeks. Over the next few years, he played in a series of local bands, earning himself a reputation as an innovative and solid guitar player. But, it was not until he had moved to California that he discovered the art of DJing... At his first electronic music event in 1998, Shane was immediately transfixed when he saw what the DJ could do, and it was only a matter of months before he had purchased turntables and dove in to the art of mixology. The turntables and mixer are incredibly flexible instruments, giving complete control and direction to the DJ. Genres are nothing but weak boundaries, meant to be melded in to something else. The music is nothing but a piece of the puzzle, each song and sound looking for its mate. Equipment is there to be put to the test. Applying the music to the canvas of the dance floor and pushing it to the limit, Shane performs with a myriad of cuts, tricks and mixes; he feels the crowd and brings them on a musical and technical journey. Besides electro, Shane explores multiple other genres, instruments and styles including drum & bass, minimal techno and an experimental fusion of jazz, spoken word, ambient and downtempo. Many a chill room has been rocked... Shane has been incredibly true to his passion for music, and has spent the majority of his life trying to push his limits and propel himself to the next level of DJ mastery. This passion has led him along many different paths-one being UCLA, to guest-lecture for a graduate-level musicology course on electronic music. More recently, Shane has been playing regularly at parties and clubs in and around the San Francisco Bay Area and has earned himself the respect of his peers with his innovative mixing style, love of the music and the ability to push himself and the crowd successfully to their limits. Shane is currently a resident at the recently re-opened DNA Lounge (dnalounge.com) in San Francisco, and is an active member of many collectives including Epiphany and Cloud Factory. Besides DJing, Shane is an active member of the SFRaves community, and is involved in the booking of artists for various clubs, weeklies and collective parties. There, he is able to donate his resources to help the San Francisco music scene evolve and progress to the next level. Shane Knapp + 408.718.3707 + incomplete@gmail.com + http://www.nuclearferret.com
